One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.– Abraham Maslow

FAQs

What is coaching?

Coaching is often described as working with someone to unlock their true potential, or helping them become their ‘best self’. Or helping them to move out of their comfort zone. For if we stay in our comfort zone – guess what? It gets smaller.

These are real quotes I have collected from my coachees on completing a course of coaching, when I ask them how would they describe coaching?

‘An opportunity to become the best version of yourself.’

‘An opportunity to discover and then focus on what is most important to you in your life, and take steps in that direction. You can start feeling more fulfilled, today.’

‘A super personal, inspirational, deep experience.’

‘Learning to be your best self!’

‘A way to improve your performance and change your mindset.’

‘Much more elaborate and positive than counselling or other therapies, it unlocks potential, helps you confront areas where you’re stuck.’

Who is coaching for?

For businesses:

Coaching in the workplace is suitable for every business.

Coaching at work helps your people identify their strengths, achieve their goals, and reach their full potential. The results? A high-performing workforce ready to tackle whatever comes their way.

Coaching will bring out the best in your people, through an engaging and personalised experience that will encourage personal growth.

For individuals:

Anyone who wants to create change and feel happier. My job as a coach is to create a safe, creative space where we can really explore anything and everything in service of your coaching goals. I will ask powerful questions, listen deeply to you, explore, challenge and empower you to move forward in your life with conscious, purposeful, positive intent. I promise confidentiality, no judgement and that I will always be honest and direct with you.

What does the coaching process look like for corporates?

The first step is a free consultation. After I understand your needs, I will put together a proposal that we can discuss, including an outline for Phase 1 and any associated costs.

Phase 1 is usually an initial date stamped period of time that we will agree together up front, during which I will conduct a hybrid of individual interviews & subsequent group coaching, with a review point that we mutually agree to. I will commit to an initial project price that depends on the group size and agreed format, timings and objectives.

When Phase 1 is complete, we stop, evaluate and decide if there is a need for further coaching and if so, what does that look like? Sometimes the main issues are resolved during Phase 1, other times there is a need for further coaching, either one to one, working in pairs if needed or in groups or teams.

What does the coaching process look like for individuals?

The first step is Discovery. This usually takes 1 – 2 sessions. During this time we explore everything about you, what is important to you and we also create your coaching goals. We set up some tools and resources that will serve you in the coaching and in your life as well. I usually recommend we book in 6 to 8 sessions in total so that we have time to work on your goals and really move you forward.

Can coaching be done remotely, via video or audio call?

Yes of course, I am completely flexible with how we coach. If we can coach face to face that is always a lovely way to coach if you happen to be based in Manchester in the UK! Most of my coaching is done remotely, on audio or video call. Some of my clients prefer audio only which is fine for me. Some like to do a ‘walk and coach’ so that they can get out in the fresh air – get away from their screen, as this time is just for you! That is something we discuss during our first call, I remain flexible during our time together. You get to choose.

I feel apprehensive about having coaching.

That is completely normal, everybody does. What could be more exciting and yet scary at the same time, about knowing you’re going to talk about things that are important in your life, and be challenged to explore them more deeply and create change? Most of us don’t do that on a day to day basis, some of us have never done it.

I would like to reassure you that I respect everyone that I coach, I create a really safe space, and you don’t have to share details of your story. We can still coach together and create change. There will not be any judgement from me, we are all different and I celebrate that!

Can I have therapy alongside coaching?

I am not a trained therapist or a counsellor, although coaching can be incredibly therapeutic. Everyone’s needs are different. I have some coachees who have decided they no longer want to continue therapy since having coaching with me, and others who have gone on to seek out therapy – both as a result of the coaching.

Coaching can certainly support you alongside therapy if so desired, with both professionals helping move you forward into your future. I like it if you can tell your therapist or counsellor that you are receiving coaching and that you also inform me that you are having therapy so that we can say whatever is needed to be said, openly and constructively, in service of you.

What are the differences between therapy and coaching?

A useful blog from The Co-active Training Institute is here.

I don’t feel sufficiently qualified to tell anyone what the differences are, as I am a certified Coach and not a therapist. Many therapists use coaching techniques and vice versa. What I can say, is that should we encounter issues that are affecting your daily health and wellbeing, I would name that with you so that we can have a discussion about it and I may signpost you towards getting a different type of professional help. Coaching is not always the right option to choose to explore the root causes of something that has occurred in the past.

Once this has been discussed, we will agree together whether we both feel comfortable in continuing with coaching or not. This is not a black and white thing, it’s something we would discuss and agree together.

Is our coaching confidential?

Our coaching is completely confidential.

There are a few exceptions driven by coaching ethics; should I believe that you are at risk of harming yourself or someone else, or participating in illegal activity, I am legally required by the ICF Code of Ethics to disclose this to somebody. I will always talk to you first.

What does coaching cost?

The first stage in any coaching partnership is to make sure that there is a good natural fit with your coach. If you’re going to invest in what’s likely to be a minimum of a 3 month relationship – or longer, then you’ll want to be happy that you’ve chosen the right person to work with. That’s why every coaching relationship starts with a free of charge introductory session.

Our initial chat will help you decide whether I’m the right coach for you and it will also give us an opportunity to agree on how we can best work together. This preliminary discussion would typically be a 30 minute video call.

After that:

For corporates, I have a day rate that I share with you after our first meeting as part of my proposal for working with you.

For individuals, it is an hourly rate and I recommend 6 sessions as a starting point, although I am flexible and can discuss packages and discounts with you. I share that information with you during our first meeting and we will discuss it together to ensure that what we agree, works for us both.

What my clients say…

What is DiSC?

DiSC is a personality profiling tool. I am a trained DiSC practitioner and facilitator. I use the tool with individuals & teams to develop personal insight, inspire genuine appreciation of others, to ignite behavioural & cultural change, and ultimately increase performance.

It is usually used in a corporate setting, working with leaders and teams, however I also offer this tool on a one to one basis.

A formal explanation follows:

‘Everything DiSC is a personal development learning experience that measures an individual’s preferences and tendencies based on the DiSC® model. This simple yet powerful model describes four basic styles: D, i, S, and C, and serves as the foundation for the Everything DiSC Application Suite. Participants receive personalised insights that deepen their understanding of self and others, making workplace interactions more enjoyable and effective. The result is more engaged and collaborative teams and meaningful culture improvement in organisations.’ Source, The Fruitful Toolbox
